Update why is 5G not here yet?

Extra space will be released on the national frequency bands on December 1, 2023, so that 5G can finally be rolled out. At the end of this year, the frequency in the 3.5 Gigahertz (GHz) band will be auctioned. Minister Micky Adriaansens of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy has made extra room for 5G by amending the National Frequency Plan (NFP).

Satellite company Inmarsat still uses the 3.5 Gigahertz band for emergency, urgent and safety communication. It took years for the challenge with Inmarsat to be solved. An incorrect estimate by the ministry contributed to the delay. Now the cabinet itself will cover the costs of Inmarsat’s relocation, which will hopefully be completed by January 1, 2024.

The frequency range of 300 Megahertz for national mobile communication will become available after the auction. Together with 2x 50 Megahertz for local wireless applications (private networks). When the foreign location is not yet operational, Inmarsat can still get limited space (80 Megahertz) to continue its activities.
