MFF2 simchips

MFF2 simchips

The MFF2 (Miniaturised Form Factor 2) is a small-sized sim card measuring 6×5 mm, also called a simchip. The SIM chip is a vacuum-sealed embedded SIM card that is soldered directly to the PCB of a device. This improves security, reliability and reduces the impact of shock, corrosion and other environmental factors. During manufacturing, the labour-intensive installation of the SIM card is replaced by loading a roll of SIM chips at the pick and place robot that places the SIM chip on the PCB.

Frequently asked questions about MFF2

What is MFF2?

MFF2 (Miniaturised Form Factor 2) is the smallest format mounted directly on the PCB of hardware. This saves space, allowing hardware to be made compact. The MFF2 simchip enables remote monitoring and management of plants, equipment, and sensors. Data is then read via 2G to 5G, NB-IoT or LTE-M and routed to the cloud. The sim cards enable you to make business processes and services more efficient, save costs and create new business models.

What is the difference between an MFF2 SIM chip and a traditional SIM card?

An MFF2 SIM chip is a built-in, permanent chip that requires no physical replacement, while a traditional SIM card is removable and must be manually inserted into the device.

How exactly does it work?

Communication involves unlocking data from a device. An MFF2 SIM chip is placed on the circuit board of a device. The APN we provide must be configured in the device. The SIM chip can then access the 2G to 5G, LTE-M and NB-IoT network. The device can then achieve a successful connection and is assigned an IP address.

Are there any special requirements for implementing MFF2 simchips in IOT devices?

The main requirement is that the device must be designed to support an MFF2 simchip. This includes proper hardware and software integration to exploit the functionality of the eSIM.

MFF2 examples

Case examples of customers implementing MFF2 simchips from Thingsdata include: smart energy meters, wearable medical devices, GPS trackers, smart street lighting and traffic management systems.

What can I do with a sim management system?

A sim management system is a web-based environment in which all MFF2 simchip are conveniently listed together. MFF2 applications often involve monitoring and managing several tens to thousands of simchips. For this purpose, specific management platforms have been designed where you have full control, allowing our customers to apply inventory management, real-time insight and lifecycle management.
