Circuit Switched Data will stop at KPN on May 1, 2021

On May 1, 2021, KPN will say goodbye to Circuit Switched Data (CSD). So switch quickly from the analog era to the digital IP era. With the arrival and possibilities of new technologies, the time has come to say goodbye to an old technology. The CSD service is based on analog technology. This technology has been used in the M2M landscape for a long time, but has become obsolete with the upswing of IP. Maintaining this complex technology no longer fits the providers strategy and will therefore disappear quickly.

CSD origin

CSD was introduced in the 1990s to enable data transfer between mobile and fixed networks. For example for alarm systems, controlling barriers in parking garages and opening and closing bridges. CSD is a forerunner of IP based technologies.

Future-proof technology based on IP offers many more possibilities. KPN will therefore no longer support the CSD service from 1 May 2021. If CSD is used, the equipment will no longer be connected to the network after May 1, 2021. That is why it is important to switch to a digital and future-proof solution (M2M or LTE M) in time. KPN’s IoT simcards are prepared for IP. The simcards we supply (also the ones you had for CSD) are suitable for IP on 2G, 3G, 4G and LTE-M.
