HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is a protocol for secure communication over the Internet. It is an extension of the HTTP protocol and adds encryption and authentication to protect data in transit. HTTPS uses Transport Layer Security (TLS) or its predecessor, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), to encrypt data sent between a client and a server. Digital certificates are used to verify the identity of the server so that the client is communicating with the correct server.
