5G is the successor to 4G, the technology currently used for mobile internet. The new 5G technology in telecom masts must quickly connect to Internet of Things devices that support this.
The frequencies required for a 5G network are sold in two phases. The actual auction of the first three frequency bands (700, 1,400 and 2,100 MHz) is planned to take place before June 30, 2020. The 3.5 GHz band will be auctioned in early 2022. Both Dutch and foreign telecom providers can register for the auction. However, the European Commission has decided ‘risky providers’ may be excluded from the core of the 5G network.
