We will have to wait a little longer for faster 5G internet. This is because Inmarsat is causing delays in its development. The radio frequencies destined for the 3.5 GHz band are still owned by Inmarsat.

On 1 February 2024, Inmarsat will lose them, Economic Affairs Minister Adriaansens has indicated. To this end, the National Frequency Plan will be amended. Indeed, a stalemate has arisen between Inmarsat and the Ministry of Economic Affairs after a long time.

The auction of new radio frequencies was constantly being postponed because Inmarsat was still using them. Inmarsat is using the frequency to receive emergency calls from sea. However, this communication goes through the same frequencies meant for mobile networks.

Moving to Greece

Inmarsat had previously filed summary proceedings against the Ministry of Economy. This resulted in an advice to move to Greece plus compensation. However, the accompanying licence from the Greek telecoms authorities runs until 2027, Inmarsat wants it extended until the end of 2032. According to Adriaansens, Inmarsat is asking for guarantees that are not possible anywhere in Europe. However, the move to Greece is almost complete, with final tests now being completed in Greece.

It is still unclear when the new licences for the 5G network will be auctioned. The auction is reportedly expected to raise at least €176 million.
