Providers acquire new radio frequencies in the Netherlands

5G auction

KPN, Vodafone, and Odido have secured new radio frequencies during the 5G auction. The total cost for these new frequencies was €174.4 million, just slightly above the minimum required bid of €170.0 million. Interested providers were able to bid on the 3.5 GHz band frequencies starting June 25th, with the auction concluding on the afternoon of July 1st.

Each telecom provider – KPN, Vodafone, and Odido – purchased 100 MHz of frequencies. The 5G network frequencies were distributed evenly among the three providers, adhering to a 40% limit per provider to ensure fair distribution and prevent any single party from monopolizing the spectrum.

Immediate utilization of frequencies permitted

The licenses for these radio frequencies are valid until December 31, 2040. Providers can begin using the frequencies at the end of this month. The demand for faster mobile internet has been increasing, with annual growth rates of 30% to 50%. To meet this growing demand, providers need to expand their networks. While new antennas can be added to existing frequencies, there is a limit to the capacity that can be achieved this way. Additional radio frequencies are necessary for further expansion.

Auction faced years of delays

Last year, Inmarsat relocated from Burum, Friesland to Greece. Inmarsat used the 3.5 GHz band for emergency signals in aviation and maritime, and no one else was allowed to use this band to avoid interference. This relocation, which was initially planned for 2021, delayed the auction. Most European countries have already auctioned the 3.5 GHz band and have it in use. Additional delays were caused by legal disputes against the National Frequency Plan.
