More and more organizations are becoming concerned about the upcoming phase-out of 2G and 3G networks worldwide. In this article, we summarize the Network Sunset updates, including changes and additions from recent months.
Why is this important for IoT?
If your planned deployment or existing devices rely on 2G and/or 3G, a network sunset can lead to:
- loss of connectivity;
- increased operational pressure (urgent migrations, field visits);
- unexpected costs (hardware replacement, recertification).
At the same time, 2G/3G can still be attractive in certain scenarios due to lower costs and because high 4G speeds are not always required.

What do we recommend?
- Identify which devices are still using 2G/3G (per country/provider).
- Plan migration to 4G/5G or LTE-M / NB-IoT where appropriate, well ahead of the listed dates.
- Take into account countries where the provider has a “Planned” status but has not yet published a date (e.g. Ghana, Switzerland/Salt).
