An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM capable of storing multiple operator profiles. These profiles contain subscription data and applications that provide secure connectivity to cellular networks. Unlike a physical SIM card, profiles are managed remotely in accordance with the Remote SIM Provisioning specifications defined by the GSMA.
Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) covers the downloading, installation, activation, deactivation, and deletion of operator profiles via secure eSIM Subscription Manager (SM) platforms. This eliminates the need for physical access to the device.
Although eSIM originally referred to a SIM soldered directly onto the device, the technology is available in multiple form factors, including embedded SIM (MFF2) and integrated SIM (iSIM) implemented within a secure enclave of a System-on-Chip (SoC).
eSIM enables scalable, remotely managed connectivity and is widely used in IoT and industrial deployments.
